Paper strip & ruler: work out the ring size without a ring

Work out the correct ring size without a ring? We have a simple method. All you need is a pen, a strip of paper and a ruler.

Preparations
First cut an 8 - 10 cm / 3 -4 inch long, maximum 1 cm / 1/2 inch wide strip from a sheet of paper.

Step 1: wrap the measuring tape (or string) around the base of the finger in question.

Step 2: Use the pen to make a small mark on the string or tape indicating where they overlap.

Step 3:  Flatten out the thin strip of paper or the tape measure and measure how many cm / inches from the mark you just made to the end of the paper or the tapeline you used.

Step 4: Match that measurement with the corresponding ring sizes, below.

Example: A length of 5.2 cm corresponds to US size 6.

Perform control measurements to compensate for measurement fluctuations. Repeat steps 1 - 3 a few times and then work out the mean value of your measurements.

Using a measuring tape is the best and most accurate method to determine your ring size. For the best results, make sure to give enough space to accommodate your knuckle. Keep in mind that your fingers vary in size during the day depending on several factors, like temperature and humidity. Therefore, it is recommended to measure your finger at the end of the day, when it is likely the largest. Also, the same finger might differ in ring size for your left and right hand, make sure to measure the finger that you are planning to wear the ring on.

If you do not know your ring size, I highly recommend having your finger sized by a local jeweler and asking for your US ring size. You can also try this website, measure your finger using the chart as a guide or purchase a sizer here.
